I Police si formano nel 1977 grazie a Stewart Copeland (batterista). Conobbe Gordon Matthew Sumner (in arte Sting) bassista e cantante ed Henry Padovani (chitarrista) ed insieme pubblicarono Fall Out (loro primo singolo). Padovani venne poi rimpiazzato da Andy Summers (chitarrista degli Animals).
I Police ebbero seri problemi all’inizio per farsi notare, ma anche per pubblicare il loro primo album, visto il loro scarso budget ma grazie al singolo Roxanne riuscirono a farsi sentire ed iniziare cosi una scalata verso il successo. Nel 1979 vediamo pubblicare i loro primi album, con pezzi come Can't Stand Losing You, Roxanne, So Lonely, Message in a Bottlee Walking on the Moon, pezzi che rimarranno nella storia dei Police e nella storia della musica pop-rock.
